Four star accessibility

Enjoyment of one of the most dramatic coastlines in the UK is being made even more accessible with focused investment at an independent hotel.

T

he 45 bedroomed four-star St Moritz Hotel & Spa, perched on the headland at Trebetherick, Cornwall, has officially launched its accessibility suite. Owner Hugh Ridgway worked closely with consultant Brian Seaman of Tourism for All to ensure the new facility optimizes inclusion for all at the modernist resort venue, enabling guests to fully enjoy every facility.

The bedroom suite includes low level storage, a bed to bath hoist, emergency drop cords, body drier and Closomat Lima Lift height adjustable 'wash and dry' toilet, plus a separate room for the guest's carer if required. Beyond the accessible suite, the hotel is providing a wet wheelchair and dipper to provide easy access to and enjoyment of the spa and pool in the leisure complex.

Hugh explained, "The Closomat Lima Lift was the first piece of accessible equipment we installed, and found it to be very popular, especially disabled guests, prompting our decision to enhance facilities so our hotel could be truly enjoyed by everyone. The Lima Lift is so flexible, it can adjusted to the most appropriate height for every individual to use easily, whether or not transferring from a wheelchair; its integral douche and drier means guests can use it without having their carer clean them afterwards."

Double amputee Mark Stevens (18), who was one of the hotel's guests of honour at the official launch of the suite, added, "It is great to have a destination like the St Moritz understanding that just because someone has a disability, it doesn't mean they shouldn't be able to enjoy a break in comfortable, quality surroundings. The suite has been equipped so well I can relax as much as anyone else, without having to constantly ask my carer to help me with even basic activities like daily personal hygiene."

The wall-hung Closomat Lima Lift is manufactured in the UK, by Closomat, the UK's top supplier of disabled toileting solutions. Controls in the integrated arm supports enable the toilet to be raised or lowered to the easiest height for the user; flush pads strategically positioned in the cistern enable the user to use hand or body pressure to trigger the flushing, douching and drying processes, eliminating the need to twist and bend to manually cleanse (or be cleaned) with toilet tissue.
