Flat spaces to take a break
A new concept in accessible holidays has now officially opened its doors.
lat Spaces is the brainchild of Mouth & Foot Painting Artist and thalidomider Tom Yendell.
The Flat Spaces Foundation aims to create, in every county, a purpose-built, completely level access and fully accessible holiday bungalow. The first one, in Ropley, Hampshire, is now open and taking bookings, with plots already secured for the next phase in Surrey and Kent.
The three-bedroomed bungalow is built all on one level, and includes, among other assistive technology, a ceiling track hoist, variable height beds, height-adjustable kitchen worktops, and a Closomat Lima Lift height-adjustable wash and dry toilet in the level access, 17m2 wetroom.
“Organising conferences for Mouth and Foot Painting Artist made me aware of how difficult it is to find proper accessible accommodation,” explained Tom. “Flat Spaces have been purpose-designed to give more space and better maneuverability to disabled people, even down to going to the loo, so they and their carers can enjoy their break and relax. It will have a big impact on their lives, being able to access suitable holiday accommodation.”
Added Robin Tuffley, Closomat marketing manager, “We know that people make a conscious decision not to go away from home, even for a day, if they believe they can’t access suitable toilets. Too often, ‘accessible’ holiday accommodation is limited to being level access, and/or having a wetroom. Flat Spaces go way beyond, to ensure properly fully accessible self-catering accommodation, so as many disabilities as possible are accommodated.”
The wall-mounted Closomat Lima Lift within Ropley looks like, and can be used as, a conventional WC, but has built-in douching and drying. Thus, the user does not have to rely on their carer to wipe them clean. Additionally, controls in the integral arm supports mean the toilet can be easily, automatically, lowered and raised to each user’s personal requirements, to make getting on, off and using, the toilet as comfortable as possible.
